Since many of our early members expressed an interest in RPGs, I thought it would be fun to breakdown our favorite RPGs, system by system. Let's start with the NES. I am going to be somewhat traditional and go with Final Fantasy, simply because it was the first real turn-based JRPG that I played. As a kid, I would have included The Legend of Zelda and Star Tropics, but as they are not really RPGs in the eyes of many, I'll leave them out. To me, the original FF felt like such a massive and engrossing adventure back in the day, and I enjoyed it much more than its direct competitor, Dragon Warrior, which felt somehow clunky by comparison (although I have never played DW III and IV). I know there are other RPGs on the NES worthy of mention, but none seem to have captured that special, exploratory vibe that FF did.

I'm not as much of an RPG guy as it seems a lot of other people are these days. With that said, I've enjoyed some and have good memories with some games in the genre. With the NES, my experiences were with the usual suspects, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior(Dragon Quest).
Final Fantasy seemed to ride a nice wave of momentum via word of mouth. A friend of mine got it and raved about it, so I gave it a shot. It was a relatively fresh experience, similar in some ways to Dragon Warrior and Phantasy Star. I enjoyed a lot of the ideas in the game and put a good bit of time into it. I think I got pretty close to the end, but I never did finish it. I think I needed to do a good bit of grinding to have a realistic shot at finishing the game. That's probably when my dislike for grinding for experience was born.
I got Dragon Warrior for free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. That seemed like an amazing deal back then. I enjoyed the game as well, even if it was probably very clunky and primitive. Much like the original Phantasy Star, a lot of the charm was in the enemy design, such as the gold men and the slimes. I have an amusing memory related to Dragon Warrior. I was not good enough or patient enough to make it to the end of Dragon Warrior, but I knew a guy who made it all the way to the end of the game, but hadn't beaten the final boss. He came over one day and got to the boss and let me fight it to see how quickly I'd lose. I ended up beating the game for him. He was pretty astounded when it happened.

The beauty of 8 bit RPGs is the ability to use you imagination and go on a real (long lasting) adventure and live in the In-game world. you would really get your moneys worth back in the day (If you pick up FF or Dragon Warrior you could play the for months) but silent service of rush-in attack not so much. I'm not to familiar with RPGS on Nes except the heavy hitters (FF & DW) Any good Cheap recommendations???
If your talking about Sega Master System RPGS.. well that a different story all together.
