It was an interesting time in gaming. Back then, there were no rules for sequels and it was common, at least briefly, for sequels to be significantly different from their predecessors. I'm not terribly fond of either game here. Super Mario 2 I revisited not too long ago. It's good and fun, but it's not as good or as fun as other Mario games. It always leaves me feeling like something is missing. It controls oddly too. At least it's mostly straightforward. Zelda 2 seems to require some outside guidance, like Castlevania 2. It's also a bit punishing on top of its actual challenge, if I recall correctly.
So my vote goes to Mario 2.

I've never really been into Mario 2. It's alright, but playing it mostly just makes me think that I'd rather be playing Mario 3.
Zelda II is a fantastic game. Sure, it has its rough spots, and the difficulty is rather uneven, but the swordplay and combat system is the finest you'll see on the NES.
